Western Water Recycling Facility Phase 2 Expansion

Description:

The Western Water Recycling Facility Phase 2 Expansion consisted of expansion of the existing facility to 3.0 MGD capacity secondary and tertiary treatment facilities.  The project facilities included: headworks with two mechanical bar screens, two vortex-type grit removal chambers, monitoring, and metering; sewage lift station; three primary sedimentation tanks; three oxidation ditch-type aeration basins with two 75 hp slow speed surface aerators and control system for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification; four circular secondary clarifiers; two secondary effluent balancing ponds; tertiary influent pump station; three cloth media‑type filter units; four chlorine contact chambers; tertiary storage pond; two anaerobic digesters; and recycled water booster station with four 200 hp pumping units and algae removal screens.

The project also included a recycled water pump station with four 200 hp vertical turbine pumping units, each with variable frequency drives and three automatically cleaning algae filters/strainers, and modification of a recycled storage pond to add two concrete lined, 1.2 MG balancing ponds.  The expansion was sequenced to enable continuous operation of the existing plant; no unplanned treatment process interruptions were experienced.  The project involved working closely with and as an extension to Western’s staff.  Constructability and sequencing considerations were an integral portion of both the design and construction engineering services.
